2) Fatigue Management and Fitness for Duty Policy

Purpose
To prevent fatigue-related accidents and ensure drivers are fit to safely transport passengers.

Scope
All Byron Rides driving work, including waiting time, late-night work, and long-distance trips.

Fitness for duty rules
You must not drive if you are impaired by:

  • fatigue or sleep debt
  • illness, dizziness, or unsafe side effects of medication
  • alcohol, drugs, or hangover
  • emotional distress that impacts safe driving

Driver responsibilities

  • Arrive rested and ready to drive.
  • Tell the manager immediately if you feel too tired or unwell to drive.
  • Take regular breaks, hydrate, and eat sensibly on longer runs.
  • Use safe “pause” options, stop driving and call the manager if drowsiness starts.

Manager responsibilities

  • Roster realistically and support safe breaks.
  • When fatigue risk is identified, adjust runs, swap drivers, delay or cancel if safety cannot be assured.
  • Review fatigue incidents and update controls.

What to do if you feel drowsy while driving
Safely pull over, hazards on, take a break, and contact the manager. Do not “push through”.
